Which Makeup is Best for Bridal?

The most beautifully done makeup for your wedding day is makeup that is going to make you look and feel like the best version of yourself. We want you to look glam. Whether you choose a rosy pink lip, or a red lip, wear false eyelashes, or just mascara, wedding looks tend to lean to the neutral side and it is not always the time to try something extreme or avant-garde. Wedding makeup looks are classic and timeless, and will live on for the years to come when you get to look back at the photos from your wedding day. All in all, having a makeup look and using shades of makeup that compliment and tie your whole look together is important.

Wedding makeup looks may vary based on personal style, but also based on your location’s weather and the traditions of your wedding. For example, you may find that Indian wedding makeup tends to have more glitz, shimmer, and bold colors than your classic bridal look.

These are some bridal makeup techniques and styles you may find:

Classic Bridal

The classic bridal look we are referring to is the majority of the results you will find when you google ‘bridal makeup looks’. This will be your classic neutral brown tones, a light shimmer on your eyelids, rosy cheeks, and a nude pink lip to match. Essentially, it is bridal makeup that will look natural, neutral, and glowy, and will enhance all your best features.

Indian Bridal

On your classic Indian bridal makeup, you will usually see stunning bold colors, sparkly eyeshadow, with warm bronzed cheeks, and a tied together look that looks naturally glamorous. Unlike a classic bridal look, traditionally Indian brides will wear color for their eyeshadow, rather than sticking to neutrals. However, neutral tones are of course, still an option.

HD Makeup

HD makeup stands for ‘high definition’, and is different from other everyday makeup products. The easiest way to differentiate them is that HD products will say ‘HD’ in the name, for example, the Make Up For Ever HD Skin Foundation. With the right products, HD makeup can withstand a hot day in Thailand, and is made for looking flawless under lights and in photographs, concealing any dark circles and blemishes, while still looking like your skin.

Airbrush Makeup

Airbrush makeup is a special technique used by professionals, where liquid makeup is lightly sprayed onto your face using an airbrush gun, rather than using traditional application methods like a brush or beauty sponge. Airbrush makeup is lightweight and perfect for a natural look. However, make sure to consult with your professional makeup artist, as some will have more trust in their standard products, rather than airbrush tools!

How to Choose a Makeup Artist for Your Wedding

Like every other style of art, every makeup artist also has their own style. Some makeup artists have areas that they specialize in, and some are able to be more broad and offer you many types of makeup looks. Researching and choosing an artist that has a style similar to what you are looking for is important to be able to bring your dream look to life.

Something we recommend is Pinterest mood boards! Pinterest is something fun and easily lets you gather a collection of images to pull together your whole vision for your wedding. Not only is this helpful for you to see everything in one place, and to get multiple visuals for inspiration, but it is also helpful for your makeup artist to see references and get a better feel of what you are looking for!  Feel free to consult a few different makeup artists and go with the artist who best understands your needs.

How to Make Wedding Makeup Last

From getting ready in the morning, to dancing into the night, you will want your makeup to look flawless all day. Your makeup artist is sure to have products in their makeup kit that will contribute to your makeup lasting all day, like a powerful primer and setting spray. Your makeup artist will also be trained to work with different skin types and can adapt the products they use to give the best results for your skin. For example, having an oily skin type may require the use of more powder than someone with dry skin, as powder will help to absorb any oils.

From a makeup artist’s standpoint, there are two things to factor into getting your makeup looking perfect. That’s having a bridal makeup trial, and also impeccable time management on your wedding day. We understand that everyone wants everything to run smoothly, and you want as little stress as possible. This is what a makeup trial is for!

Before your actual wedding date, it’s definitely recommended to fit a trial into your schedule so you, your bridal team, and your makeup artist can perfect your looks and decide on what looks and feels best to save time when it comes to your wedding day! This way your makeup artist already knows which products to pick out and what worked best to make your look last all day for your specific skin type, and wants. Next, your big day arrives! Make sure you leave enough time for your glam to be finished and to settle in. You can’t rush perfection! Give yourself a bit of time for some last minute touch-ups before you walk down the aisle!

If you want to take some extra steps to keep your look fresh all day, here are a few things you can do:

  • Have a pre-wedding spa day to get your skin looking its absolute best! When your skin is healthy and glowing, it makes an even more perfect base to apply makeup onto. However, try to avoid new or harsh products before your wedding day to avoid any unexpected reactions.
  • If you’re not asking your makeup artist to stay with you for the day, consider having your own touch-up kit or invest in some travel sized makeup! This could include some blotting sheets for oily skin, a powder puff, some extra lipstick, or a bottle of setting spray. The Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray is a favorite for many for extra longevity!
